Position Summary: This is a fantastic opportunity for a talented senior nurse manager to lead the London Bridge orthopaedic team into an exciting future as two new operating theatres and additional beds are being built in the coming months

Orthopaedics is one of the biggest specialties at London Bridge and Neuro-spinal services are expanding. We are looking for a highly motivated and forward thinking manager to create a centre of excellence on our 4th floor.

We have a wonderful team of knowledgeable, multi disciplinary staff working with a great bunch of dynamic consultants. Now we need a great leader to take us forward – see the job profile below:

Job Profile:
The Senior Nurse Manager provides clinical and professional leadership to the departmental team.
They are responsible and accountable for practice within the clinical area and for delivering a quality service to all stakeholders.
They are responsible for identifying areas for development and implementing and evaluating change using current research, audit and experience
They are required to manage the department within an agreed budget including complying with the workforce planning objectives whilst developing the business appropriately.
They have overall responsibility for the patient environment within the department and are required to work in close partnership with hotel services and all other members of the facilities team.

They proactively promote their department within LBH and HCA, participating in relevant forums.
General
Responsibility:

Leadership/Management

1. To be a highly visible leader and role model to all nurses within the team.
2. To liaise in a professional manner with internal and external customers.
3. To ensure the patient environment is of a high standard, including levels of cleanliness, to maintain safety at all times.
4. To appreciate and be sensitive to patients’ physical, psychological, spiritual and cultural requirements.
5. To investigate incidents and complaints thoroughly, enabling the CEO/CNO to respond within the agreed timeframe.
6. To deputise for or represent the deputy CNO or CNO when necessary.
7. To implement and ensure that staff comply with all corporate, hospital and departmental policies.
8. To understand the Clinical Governance process and ensure staff comply with the Infection Control and H&S policies to minimise risks to patients and staff
9. To be responsible for managing the department within an agreed annual budget including working hours and units of service, maximizing revenue recapture and cost control.
10. To performance manage all staff ensuring annual appraisals and quarterly reviews are carried out on time.
11. To devise and implement an annual service plan for the department that is clearly linked to the hospital business plan.
12. To respond to customer feedback (patients, Consultants and all key stakeholders) and develop the ward/department as a business.
13. To be responsible for recruitment and retention of staff and provide departmental Human Resource management supported by the HR department.
14. To offer Clinical Supervision to all staff if required.
15. To play a key role in the site management at LBH on a rotational basis
Clinical
1. To demonstrate excellent clinical practice at all times and to be professionally accountable for own practice as evidenced by the clinical competency framework and in accordance with NMC and HCA guidelines.
2. To lead all nurses in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient care.
3. To ensure all documentation is accurate and complies with NMC and HCA guidelines.
4. To act promptly and take appropriate action in medical emergencies.
5. To ensure that patient dignity and privacy is respected at all times.
6. To be vigilant about patient confidentiality; ensuring that exchange of information takes place safely.

7. To allocate appropriately, utilising the nursing skill mix to its full potential.
8. To deal effectively with unplanned admissions.
9. To be responsible for the multidisciplinary team to ensure optimum care is delivered to the patient.
10. To be responsible for the maintenance of all equipment including the maintenance of service agreements.
11. To monitor levels of stock drugs and consumables and order appropriately.
12. To be responsible for initiating the audit of clinical practice within the department and changing practice where appropriate.
Practice Development and Education
1. To be responsible for initiating, developing and promoting evidence based practice within the clinical area
2. To keep up to date with current best practice within own clinical area.
3. To support all staff to maintain and develop their skills in compliance with an annual Learning & Development plan
4. To assess staff as competent to undertake specific clinical competencies within the own area.
5. To ensure that patient information is up to date and reflects current best practice.
6. To be responsible for ensuring all clinical staff attend their mandatory training days on an annual basis.
7. To maintain records of staff training and development activities.
8. To ensure representation from their department at the Clinical Practice Development Group and the Clinical Education Forum and any other forum pertinent to the clinical area.

Requirements Knowledge and Understanding

In order to perform this role the post holder will need a minimum of:
• First level registration at Diploma or Degree level
• Significant post registration experience, which will have been at G grade or equivalent in relevant clinical speciality(Orthopaedics/Neuro)
• Post basic qualification in clinical specialty relevant to practice area(Orthopaedics/Neuro)
• In possession of or working towards first level degree
• Teaching and Assessing and/or Mentorship qualification
• A management qualification is desirable
