Position Summary: The postholder is expected to perform all aspects of the routine embryology service offered by the Fertility Unit. Routine laboratory maintenance and administration will also be a requirement of the postholder. The post requires five days per week and a rota of one in four Saturdays to be shared with the Senior Embryologist.
General
Responsibility:

•Preparation and attendance in theatre for egg collections, embryo transfers, intrauterine inseminations and for identification and grading of eggs.
•To prepare sperm from fresh or frozen semen for all IVF and ICSI treatments and intrauterine inseminations.
•Insemination of eggs and subsequent culture. Embryo identifications, inspection and selection for transfer. Disposal of unsuitable embryos.
•To assist the Clinical Molecular Biologist with the PGAS programme.

•To carry out embyo biopsies when required.
•Performing intracytoplasmic sperm injection as required.
•To freeze semen samples when required.
•Organising appropriate donor sperm when required and informing donor banks of pregnancies according to HFEA guidelines.
•Coordinating egg/embryo donation programme including donor matching, coding, maintenance of accurate records etc.
•Embryo and/or tissue cryopreservation and storage, subsequent thawing and transfer. To coordinate annual storage reminders for patients and ensure that they are not used at the end of the five years and are appropriately disposed of.
•To be responsible for the maintenance of laboratory stock, including plastics, culture media, supplements, chemicals, gases and liquid nitrogen.
•To adhere to strict quality control procedures in the laboratory, including regular monitoring of equipment and the environment and maintenance of a high standard of cleanliness.
•To maintain accurate and detailed records or all gametes and embryos in accordance with HFEA code of practice and local protocols.
•The post holder is responsible for the implementation of Health and Safety at Work regulations in all aspects of laboratory work.
•The postholder is responsible for ensuring safe and proper handling of gametes and embryos while in his/her care.
•The postholder will ensure the safety of cryopreserved sperm and embryos at all times by regularly checking levels of liquid nitrogen in the cryopreservation storage tank(s).
•The postholder will participate in the multi-disciplinary aspects of the team’s work including taking telephone calls and enquiries.
•The postholder is required to attend all departmental meetings.
•The postholder will have the opportunity to take part in research projects.

Requirements In order to perform this role to experienced worker standard the post holder will need:

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
BSc or HND
Licensed by HFEA as ICSI operator
ACE diploma/certificate
Knowledge of Health & Safety at Work regulations for laboratory workers
Computer literate
Knowledge of relevant hospital policies and procedures
Previous employment in similar post
