Position Summary:  They provide high quality nursing by assessing, planning, delivering and evaluating care.
 They are responsible and accountable for their own practice within the clinical area and for delivering a quality service at all times.
 They are expected to participate in initiating, implementing and evaluating change using current research, audit and experience
 They work effectively within the multidisciplinary team; supervising junior staff and deputising for the Senior Sisters and the Senior Nurse Manager when necessary.
 They help to deliver services within the agreed departmental budget without compromising patient safety.
 They promote their department and work in partnership with others within London Bridge Hospital and HCA.
General
Responsibility:

Leadership/Management

 To promote good communication channels amongst staff to enhance effective team work.
 To liaise in a professional manner with internal and external customers.
 To maintain the patient environment to a high standard to ensure safety at all times.
 To appreciate and be sensitive to patients’ physical, psychological, spiritual and cultural requirements.
 To report incidents and complaints in a timely manner and participate in the thorough investigation and response.
 To deputise for the Senior Sisters and Senior Nurse Manager in their absence, demonstrating good leadership skills.
 To be familiar with all corporate and hospital policies and relevant departmental policies to ensure compliance.
 To be familiar with the Clinical Governance process and comply with the Infection Control and H&S policies and procedures to minimise risk to patients and staff.
 To ensure good revenue recapture by recording patient charges and ensuring that others do the same.
 To provide mentorship to junior staff; undertaking annual appraisal, regular review, providing advice and support for professional development.
 To participate in LBH site management on a rotational basis

Clinical

 To demonstrate excellent clinical practice at all times and to be professionally accountable for own practice in accordance with NMC guidelines.
 To assess, plan, implement and evaluate care to meet the needs of patients and their family/carers following discussion with them.
 To fully document all aspects of patient care accurately and in a timely manner in line with NMC and HCA guidelines.
 To be able to recognise clinical problems promptly and report or take appropriate action.
 To respect and ensure patients’ dignity and privacy at all times.
 To be vigilant about patient confidentiality; ensuring that exchange of information takes place safely.
 To manage a patient caseload effectively by prioritising care and using time and resources efficiently.
 To allocate patients appropriately, utilising the nursing skill mix to its full potential.
 To be able to accommodate and deal effectively with unplanned admissions.
 To participate in Consultant ward rounds and assist medical staff with clinical procedures.
 To liaise with all members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure optimum care is delivered to the patient.
 To carry out nursing duties as requested by the Senior Sisters or Senior Nurse Manager.
 To be competent in the use of all equipment in the clinical area, perform daily checks on and subsequently report any faulty equipment.
 To ensure that adequate levels of stock consumables and drugs are maintained and report deficits appropriately.
 To participate in auditing clinical practice within the department and changing practice where appropriate.

Practice Development and Education

 To participate in the development and promotion of evidence based practice within the clinical area through quality initiatives from various nurse led forums.
 To keep up to date with current best practice within own clinical area.
 To supervise and direct junior staff by promoting a learning environment and acting as a role model.
 To assess junior staff as competent to undertake specific clinical skills.
 To ensure that all mandatory training days are attended on an annual basis.
 To recognise own limitations and request assistance as necessary.
 To provide patients and families with information regarding care and management of their conditions.

Requirements Knowledge and Understanding

In order to perform this role the post holder will need a minimum of:

• First level registration at Diploma or Degree level
• A minimum of 3 years post registration experience, 2 years of which will be in the relevant clinical speciality (Medical and SurgicalOncology)
• Be assessed as competent in the relevant clinical competencies (phlebotomy, IV cannulation, CVAD access, administration of chemotherapy)
• Teaching and Assessing and/or Mentorship qualification
• Be working towards, or have, a specialist clinical qualification in Oncology
